Durham Oldtimers Over 60 Soccer 2026 Rules & Conduct

Welcome to the Durham Oldtimers Over 60 Soccer Club's official rules. Designed to ensure fair play, safety, and enjoyment for all our members, these guidelines outline our specific format and conduct expectations for the outdoor season. We pride ourselves on our adaptability and commitment to excellence in every aspect of the game. Explore what we have to offer and how we can contribute to your success.

Rules of Play for the Durham Oldtimers Over 60 Soccer Club:

  • We play a seven-a-side format (6 outfield players and a goalie).
  • There are no offsides, and all out-of-play balls are placed back in play by foot.
  • All free kicks, out-of-bounds corners & sidelines are indirect except penalties.
  • Changes can be made on the fly, but only after the player coming off has left the field.
  • Goalkeepers under 60 years old are not allowed beyond the goalkeeping area unless it’s to retrieve a ball that will not be immediately challenged by an opposing player. If the goalkeeper is over 60, he can use the entire playing field, obviously not with his hands beyond the goalkeeper's area.
  • If a team is down by five or more goals, they can introduce an additional player to the field.
  • If a team is playing with a senior player (80 or older), the team can play him in addition to the seven.
  • Remaining rules as per FIFA apply.

Understanding our rules & safety

At Durham Oldtimers Over 60 Soccer, our rules are carefully crafted to ensure every game is fun, safe, and inclusive for all our members. With over 75 registered players ranging up to 85 years old, our focus is on minimal contact soccer. This approach allows players of all abilities and health conditions to continue enjoying the beautiful game. It all began with a simple idea fueled by a deep passion. As a senior soccer group, we pride ourselves on personal commitment to safety and fitness for all. Our approach is rooted in compassion and integrity, ensuring that everything we do reflects our commitment to the game, where there is zero tolerance for hateful, racial, or abusive behavior.

What are the key rules to ensure fair play and enjoyment?

Our games are seven-aside with specific adaptations like no offsides, indirect free kicks (except penalties), and on-the-fly substitutions. Goalkeeper movement rules vary by age, and teams can add a player if significantly behind or playing with an 80+ year old.

Why are these rules so important for player safety and enjoyment?

The majority of our players, some up to 85 years old, participate with various ailments. Our rules minimize contact, allowing everyone to prolong their playing time, stay fit, and enjoy social interaction. This ensures a welcoming environment for all skill and physical levels.

How do we address overaggressive play?

Overaggressive play is not tolerated. Referees will issue a warning, followed by a five-minute sideline rest for continued aggression. A third caution may lead to sitting out the half and potentially a disciplinary hearing. This is crucial for maintaining our minimal contact philosophy.

What special considerations are there for our oldest players (80+)?

We have players aged 80 and over—Milton, Peter, Sylvester, Alan, Neil, and Ken—who are recognized by their high jersey numbers and red shorts. They are considered 'untouchable' and cannot be physically tackled. A free kick will be awarded against any opposing team that tackles them. They are an inspiration to us all!

What should players with medical conditions do?

If you have a medical condition requiring attention, please communicate this (preferably in writing) to a couple of teammates and provide an emergency contact. This helps us ensure your safety and allows for quick response in an emergency.

What safety equipment is available and how can I help?

We have a defibrillator and a First Response Kit available between the fields, along with small first aid kits. We are seeking players with basic First Aid with CPR/AED training (within the last five years) to act as first contact individuals. We all share responsibility for looking out for one another and calling 911 if a player appears to be in medical distress.

What's the most important message for new players?

Any new player entering our division should be aware that overcompetitive and aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated. Our focus is on friendly, minimal contact soccer.

Play safe, stay social

We wish you a safe and enjoyable season. Remember, a key benefit of playing in our division is the camaraderie. Please stick around after your game to socialize and enjoy some friendly banter with the teams. This is where our journey begins.
